A new TV series that has recently premiered on the AMC network has generated hype around the world of technology. It takes a look back at a time when IT companies were in their beginning stage and computer companies raced for the next big idea.
The series is based in the 1980s, when IBM was one of the biggest fish in the technology world. As IBM controlled the computer market, a hungry group of individual’s lead by an ex IBM salesman Joe MacMillan, plots to reverse engineer an IBM computer.
A Texas software company called Cardiff Electric is thrust into the middle of MacMillan’s plot when he manages to convince management to hire him. After MacMillan starts his job, he recruits a misunderstood engineer named Gordon to help him reverse engineer the IBM computer.
When IBM catches wind of MacMillan’s plot, they become involved in a legal dispute with Cardiff. The only problem is that Cardiff did not have any knowledge of MacMillan’s plot. When they try to fire the two men for starting the project behind the companies back to get off the hook they find that MacMillan had already included this scenario in his plan.
After Cardiff realizes that the company is legally are on the hook for their employee’s actions they decide to let the men continue on the project. MacMillan has to recruit another programmer to lead the project after Cardiff’s lawyer tells the two men that they cannot legally lead the project anymore.
MacMillan immediately thinks of a college dropout that he had previously met named Cameron. He convinces her to take part in the project and then the group begins to dig into it.
