The next generation has proven to be tech savvy as more and more kids have a tablet in their hands and cell phones on their ears. Whether or not this is a good or bad thing is debatable, but one thing is for sure-we must make sure they are being safe when browsing the internet.
Your kids have access to these technologies which means they also have access to the online world. This includes social media, internet searches, and even gaming. Threats can occur as they think no harm will be done if they talk to a stranger through a simple Facebook chat or play a game with someone across the world. It is your job as the parent to protect them from these threats.
So, how do you do this? There are a few simple practices you can perform in order to keep your kids safe online.
1. Use blocking controls. Your cable and internet provider has specific settings to where you are able to control what your kids visit online. Take advantage of this by blocking specific websites you don’t want your children to be visiting.
2. Keep communication. Talk to your kids. Let them know what could happen and why it is important to stay cautious.
3. Set time limits. This is important not only for safety, but for keeping your kids grounded. No child should be on the computer or tablet non-stop. They need to experience real life, not just the cyber world. Let them know they only have a specific amount of time to play on their pieces of technology and then stick to that time limit.
