Proper asset disposal protects both company data and corporate reputations. Disposal of electronic devices through recycling is something that St. Louis IT companies take very seriously. Tecvar highly recommends that all of its IT outsourcing clients recycle their old electronic devices.
Most electronic devices store corporate and/or personal information. This includes contacts, personnel, financial, confidential, and intellectual property data. It is critical that this data is removed from the device prior to disposing of the device, whether in the trash or hopefully through recycling. When disposing of equipment for our clients, the IT professionals at Tecvar will often remove the hard drive from the equipment and have it shredded at a certified disposal company. The alternative is run software that will permanently erase all data from the drive. This is much more time consuming but may be required based on your industry.
Confidential information could be stolen from the device if the information is not properly removed. Information has even been stolen from copy machines that have been disposed of by companies. If your equipment is leased, check with your leasing company to make sure they are protecting your data.
It is very important to choose a reputable recycling company. They should be able to provide certificates of proper disposal for your equipment. Not only will this protect your data, it may also protect your reputation. Companies invest heavily in their “Green” reputations. Finding your equipment in a landfill (foreign or domestic) could destroy that reputation. Being able to prove that you used a reputable disposal company and having the documentation to prove it may go a long way to saving that reputation.
As a St. Louis IT company dedicated to the environment and its clients, Tecvar would like to highlight the benefits to recycling their old electronic devices. Besides the great feeling that helping the environment gives, there are many added benefits.
The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that every American household now owns at least 24 electronic devices. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resourses,”Discarded electronics contain hazardous materials. If disposed improperly, they pose a potential threat to human health and the environment. E-Waste accounts for 40 percent of the lead and 75 percent of the heavy metals found in landfills. Although safe when used, once electronics are discarded in a landfill, the acidic conditions provide an environment in which lead and other heavy metals may leak out. If the landfill’s liner fails, the groundwater supply may become contaminated.” Without proper disposal of these devices, the environment will diminish at a faster rate than it already has.
One benefit to recycling is that jobs in the recycling industry will be created and maintained as long as consumers continue to recycle their old devices. In an economy where every job counts this is a huge plus.
Sometimes devices manufacturers offer incentives for consumers to trade in their old device and get a new one. If you are going to upgrade devices anyway, why not get rewarded and have your old device disposed of properly? If you want to see about getting a new device and using your old one as a trade in contact the original device manufacturer to see if they offer a program.
Everyone likes a tax break right? Often times if you donate your old electronic device it can be used as a deduction on your taxes. For more information on what the tax deduction rules are visit the EPA website. If you want to donate your device to a charity, search for lists of charities in your area online and pick the one that you like the most!
If you just want to recycle your old device refer to the certified refurbishing and recycling faculties map provided by the EPA at this link.
